April marks what appears to be STEM-month in the Rocket City which kicked off this past weekend with the FIRST Robotics - Rocket City Regional where 48 teams from across the southeast gathered to compete at the VBC. It was an amazing event with lots of cool robots of varied designs seeking to win their way to the National event. Volunteers from the National Space Club - Huntsville brought the fun to the Challenger Family STEM Night on March 28th. Great turnout and lots of talk about the Space Launch System, Artemis, and returning to the moon. Brought out our new Van de Graaff generator for the first time - has a lot of additional gadgets to demonstrate with! Dr. Robinson has been CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center since February 2021. The Center is the official visitor center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the showcase for Redstone Arsenal, a Smithsonian Affiliate and home to Space Camp®, Aviation Challenge®, Space Camp Robotics and U.S. Cyber Camp®. Dr. Robinson’s served more than three decades at NASA, including as Utilization Manager for Advanced Exploration Systems for the Artemis Program.Her awards include NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Medal, a Silver Group Achievement Medal, the Astronaut Corps’ Silver Snoopy Award, and a Manned Space Flight Awareness Award. Dr. Robinson’s degrees include a doctorate and master’s in industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University. The National Space Club - Huntsville is proud to be the 2024 (and 2025) title sponsor for the Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC); one of NASA's premier STEM engagement events. This year's Rover Challenge will be hosted at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center's Aviation Challenge venue on April 19th and 20th. Approximately 70 high school and college teams from across the US and abroad will converge upon the Rocket City for two days of exciting competition.Each team has designed and built a Rover to unique NASA specifications and will traverse various obstacles and perform tasks in route to recognition and prizes.
